Letter from Santa template: what to write, sample letters, and how to mail it
What should a letter from Santa say?
A letter from Santa works best when it sounds like Santa has been paying attention. USPS’s tip for parents who answer as Santa is to make the letter as personal as possible by highlighting the child’s accomplishments over the past year, such as helping around the house, good grades in a subject, or community service. Keep it to one page and a few short paragraphs.
- Greet the child by name. The template prints “Dear” and the first name you enter.
- Name one or two real things from this year: a new skill, a brave moment, a kind act, or a chore done without being asked.
- Answer the child’s own letter if they wrote one, without promising a specific gift.
- Add one small North Pole detail, such as a reindeer, an elf’s job, or Mrs. Claus saying hello.
- End with encouragement for the year ahead. The template signs the letter “Love, Santa” and adds an optional P.S. line.
Sample letter from Santa for ages 3 to 5
Dear Maya,
The elves told me you learned to ride your scooter this year, and that you share your blocks with your baby brother. That kind of sharing makes the whole workshop smile. Dasher says hello, and Mrs. Claus is baking cookies for the reindeer tonight. Remember to go to sleep early on Christmas Eve!
Love, Santa
P.S. Please give Biscuit the puppy a pat from me.
Sample letter from Santa for ages 6 to 8
Dear Leo,
I read your letter, every word of it. I heard you finished your first chapter book this fall and helped your dad rake the whole yard. The elves were so impressed that they put a gold star next to your name on the big list. I can’t promise every wish on your list, but I can promise that I know how hard you worked this year. Keep reading. The elves want to know what happens in the next book.
Love, Santa
Sample letter from Santa for ages 9 to 11
Dear Ava,
This was a big year for you. You made the soccer team, and you stood up for a new student at school when it would have been easier to look away. That is the kind of thing I notice most. Some kids your age start asking hard questions about the North Pole. Asking good questions is a sign of a sharp mind, so keep doing it, and keep being the friend people can count on.
Love, Santa
How do you make a letter from Santa feel real?
Details matter more than decoration. Use things only your family would know, such as a pet’s name, a sibling, a trip, or the exact toy the child asked for, and write in a warm, simple voice. Arriving in the mailbox with the child’s name on the envelope helps too.
Two things IRIS can’t change: IRIS prints the whole letter, so the signature is printed rather than handwritten, and the envelope shows the return address you enter in the mailing step, with no North Pole postmark. If you want a handwritten signature or a North Pole postmark, download the PDF, print it, and follow the USPS steps below.
How much does it cost to mail a letter from Santa with IRIS?
A one-page black-and-white letter is $3.20: the $3.00 base plus $0.20 for the page, with printing, the envelope, and First-Class postage included. Color printing is $0.40 per page instead of $0.20, so a one-page color letter is $3.40. The letter this editor creates is dark text on white, so black and white is usually enough; color makes sense if you upload your own decorated PDF.
There’s no account and no subscription. You pay once per letter through Stripe Checkout after reviewing the letter, both addresses, your options, and the total. Each order mails one letter to one US address, so siblings at different addresses need separate orders. Writing the letter and downloading the PDF here is free.
When should you mail a letter from Santa so it arrives before Christmas?
USPS recommends sending First-Class Mail by Thursday, December 17, 2026, for expected delivery before December 25. That date applies within the contiguous United States and also to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and US territories. USPS notes that the actual delivery date varies with origin, destination, and when the mail is accepted.
Treat December 17 as a last resort rather than a target. IRIS mails by USPS First-Class Mail and can’t promise a delivery date, so order in early December if you want the letter to arrive before the holiday week.
Can you get a North Pole postmark on a letter from Santa?
Yes, through USPS, not through IRIS. USPS’s Greetings from the North Pole Post Office program postmarks Santa’s reply if you mail it inside a second envelope to its Anchorage postmaster. USPS recommends sending between November 23 and December 1. IRIS can’t prepare this mailing because it mails your letter straight to the recipient in one envelope with your return address, so download the PDF and follow the USPS steps:
- Have the child write a letter to Santa.
- Write a personalized reply and sign it “From Santa.”
- Put both letters in an envelope addressed to the child.
- Use SANTA, NORTH POLE as the return address on that envelope.
- Put a First-Class Mail stamp on it.
- Place it in a larger envelope, with postage on both, addressed to NORTH POLE POSTMARK, POSTMASTER, 4141 POSTMARK DR, ANCHORAGE AK 99530-9998.
Can you get a free letter from Santa?
Writing the letter in this editor and downloading the PDF costs nothing. Printing it at home and mailing it yourself costs a First-Class stamp, and the USPS North Pole postmark route needs postage on two envelopes. Having IRIS print and mail it starts at $3.20.
Is this the same as USPS Operation Santa?
No. USPS Operation Santa handles letters children write to Santa at 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888. USPS posts eligible letters online with personal details removed, and members of the public adopt them and send gifts. USPS says there’s no guarantee a letter will be adopted or answered. IRIS isn’t part of Operation Santa. If your child wants to write to Santa first, use the letter to Santa template and mail it with a stamp.
