What this tool produces
Draft one focused FDCPA debt-validation request using the existing conditional statutory language. Unlike the flexible debt information-request letter, this tool is not a freeform narrative of your facts.
Suitable for
- Writing to a debt collector after checking the validation notice, applicable timing, and whether the relevant law applies to your situation.
Not suitable for
- Answering a lawsuit or meeting a court filing deadline.
- Issuing a blanket instruction to stop all collection, proving that a debt is invalid, or guaranteeing statutory effect.
Before you start
- Have the collection notice, the collector’s correspondence address, the minimum account or reference number needed, and the stated amount available.
- Check when you received the validation information and the applicable notice deadline. Under the FDCPA, a written dispute sent within the 30-day validation period generally requires a covered debt collector to pause collection of the disputed debt until it sends verification. A timely written request for original-creditor information also has conditional protections. Do not assume these rules apply to every creditor, debt, or letter.
- Use the original creditor named in the notice, if one is listed. Otherwise leave that optional field blank rather than guessing; the letter still requests original-creditor information.
- Enter the amount in dollars without a $ symbol, for example 245.00. The letter supplies the dollar-sign prefix.
- Review the CFPB guidance and statutory source below for the conditions on validation and collection-pause rights. This tool does not calculate your deadline or guarantee a legal outcome.
