What this tool produces

Draft one flexible debt dispute and information-request letter combining your facts and the information or action you request. Unlike the focused FDCPA validation request, it uses your own narrative. It does not assemble attachments or establish that statutory validation rights apply.

Suitable for

  • Describing a specific balance or reference dispute, or requesting information, in a letter to the collector’s correspondence address on your notice.

Not suitable for

  • A litigation filing or an assembled evidence packet.
  • Automatically stopping collection, removing a debt, or guaranteeing that a freeform letter satisfies statutory validation requirements.

Before you start

  • Gather the notice or statement, the correct correspondence address, relevant dates and transactions, and the minimum account or reference number needed.
  • Identify the specific balance or other fact you dispute and the action or information you want. Include the amount if useful; it is optional.
  • Do not include a full Social Security number, payment-card number, bank login, password, or unnecessary sensitive attachments.
  • Check whether the FDCPA and the notice’s validation period apply. A written dispute sent within the 30-day validation period generally requires a covered debt collector to pause collection of the disputed debt until it sends verification; a timely written request for original-creditor information also has conditional protections. Sending this flexible letter does not by itself establish eligibility, timeliness, or compliance.
  • The CFPB guidance and statute below explain conditional rights, not a guarantee that this freeform letter satisfies them. For the existing focused request with conditional statutory wording, see the related debt validation letter.

  • Your full name— Enter the name you want printed above the return address and signature line.

  • What happened and what you are requesting— Give dates, transactions, notices, and requested action. Do not include a full Social Security number, bank login, password, or payment-card number.

Optional inputs

  • Recipient mailing address— Copy the current correspondence address from the notice, statement, or official source.
  • Account or reference number— Use only the identifier needed to locate the matter.
  • Amount involved— Enter the amount shown in the notice, statement, invoice, or request.
