IRIS, the black-haired postal messenger, compares a blank ivory letter with two sealed envelopes on a navy writing desk beneath a gold-starred arch.

At a glance

Direct answer: choose for your one letter, not a mailing campaign

For a single physical letter, look for an online print-and-mail service that accepts one order without a required recurring plan, shows a complete itemized price, lets you inspect the final PDF and both addresses, and explains what status and postal records you can actually obtain. There is no objectively best website for every letter: the right choice depends on your document, deadline, budget, privacy needs, and required proof. IRIS supports a one-off letter purchase through Stripe Checkout, with document, address, and option review before payment; compare its current prices on the IRIS pricing page.

Questions to ask before opening an account or paying

  • Can I buy exactly one letter without committing to a subscription, prepaid balance, minimum quantity, or recurring charge? Check the provider's current terms rather than assuming a free account means no plan.
  • What is the total for my actual PDF: base service, printing for every page, color or duplex choices, postage, optional Certified Mail or Return Receipt, and applicable tax? Compare final checkout amounts, not just a stamp price or advertised starting price.
  • Can I preview every page and confirm the return address, recipient address, print options, and mailing class before submitting an irreversible order?
  • Does the provider say when it will prepare and hand off the piece, distinguish its order updates from USPS acceptance, and explain whether it supplies a tracking number or an actual mailing receipt for your chosen service?
  • Are its document handling and privacy terms appropriate for the contents? Without an applicable written agreement, do not upload government identifiers, highly sensitive medical records, payment-card credentials, or other information requiring a privacy commitment the provider has not accepted.

See the current IRIS pricing page for line items, review the order total on the mailing page, and inspect the final Stripe payment amount before authorizing the one-time charge.

Match the service to the record you need

If you need…Look for…
A routine personal letterOrdinary First-Class Mail may be enough; keep a copy of the letter and order details, but do not mistake an order confirmation for USPS acceptance or delivery proof.
Evidence the piece entered the mailAsk for a USPS acceptance or mailing record for eligible Certified Mail. IRIS shows provider-reported order updates and a tracking number when available; it does not offer a downloadable, postmarked USPS mailing receipt. If a stamped receipt is required, arrange the appropriate retail USPS service.
A delivery-related recordUSPS Certified Mail tracking can show available delivery or attempt events; an eligible Return Receipt is a separate add-on for signature information. Check whether the provider actually supplies the Return Receipt artifact rather than assuming an order-status page is one.

Certified Mail is an extra service, not a universal requirement or a guarantee of arrival by a particular date. Check the recipient's instructions before buying it.

Check PDF and privacy fit before choosing

If you already have a finished letter, export it as a readable US Letter PDF and inspect its page order, margins, signatures, and attachments. Compare each site's supported file size and page limits before starting; a site that cannot print the complete packet is not the right choice even if its starting price is lower.

A print-and-mail company must handle the file and postal addresses to produce physical mail. Read its privacy terms before uploading; without an applicable written agreement with IRIS, do not submit government identifiers, highly sensitive medical records, or payment-card credentials. If the recipient requires those contents, use an approved direct submission or another suitable channel. Keep private order-status links private.

Official forms and deadlines can change the answer

For an agency form, court notice, or other rules-bound document, first check the issuer's current instructions for the accepted delivery method, destination, original ink signatures, enclosures, and deadline. A service that prints a PDF cannot furnish an original signature, a physical check, or another required original enclosure. If those are required, use an approved alternative instead of assuming online print-and-mail is sufficient.

Allow time for printing, handoff, and postal transit. An order confirmation does not mean the document was accepted by USPS or by the recipient agency, and postal tracking cannot establish that a filing was complete or timely.
