The short answer

To write a letter to a friend, put the date at the top, open with a warm greeting such as “Dear Sam,” or “Hi Sam,” and start with a line about them, not an apology for the delay. Fill the middle with real news, a memory you share, and a question or two they can answer. Close with a sign-off that sounds like you, such as “Love,” or “Talk soon,” and sign your name. Then mail it with one $0.82 Forever stamp, or have IRIS print and mail a one-page letter to a US address for $3.20 with postage included.

What is the format of a letter to a friend?

A letter to a friend is an informal letter, so it skips the addresses, subject lines, and formal closings a business letter needs. It has six parts, and only the greeting, the message, and your name are essential. Everything else is there to make the letter easier to read and nicer to keep.

Write it the way you talk to this person, in short paragraphs. One page is plenty; a friend would rather get a short letter this week than a long one never.

Is a letter worth it when you could just text?

Usually, yes, and the research suggests you are underestimating how much it will mean. In a 2022 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers ran experiments with more than 5,900 participants and found that people who reached out to someone in their social circle, including with a short note, consistently underestimated how much the recipient appreciated it. The gap was larger when the contact was a surprise.

An earlier study by Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley had people write gratitude letters and then guess how the recipients would feel. Writers underestimated how positive the recipients would feel and overestimated how awkward the letter would be. And unlike a text, a letter goes in a drawer and gets reread years later.

How do you start a letter to a friend?

Start with them. The first line sets the tone, and the most common mistake is spending it on an apology: “Sorry it’s been so long” makes the letter about your guilt instead of your friend. If you need to acknowledge the gap, do it in half a sentence and move on. Openings that work:

  • A memory: “I drove past the diner where we split one milkshake for three hours, and I thought of you.”
  • A reason: “Your postcard from Maine is on my fridge, and it’s my turn.”
  • A question: “Did you ever finish that quilt?”
  • A small scene from right now: “It’s raining, the dog is asleep on my feet, and I finally have an hour to write to you.”
  • A plain truth: “I miss you, and texting isn’t cutting it.”

What should you write about in a letter to a friend?

Write about what you would tell them across a kitchen table. The best friend letters mix three things: what is happening to you, what you remember together, and what you want to know about them. Small details carry more than big summaries, so “I burned the toast and set off the alarm at 6 a.m.” says more about your week than “Things are busy.”

  • One or two pieces of real news, with a detail or two each.
  • A memory you share, especially one they might have forgotten.
  • Something that reminded you of them this week: a song, a smell, a street.
  • Questions about their life that they can answer in a letter back.
  • What you appreciate about them, said plainly. This is the part people keep.
  • A plan, even a loose one: a visit, a call, a book you both want to read.

Sample letter to a friend you haven’t talked to in a while

October 22, 2026

Dear Lena,

I was cleaning out a closet this weekend and found the mix CD you made me for the drive to college, still in its cracked case with your handwriting on the cover. I played it in the car the whole way to work on Monday. Track six still makes me laugh.

Life here is quieter than it used to be, in a good way. I switched to the night shift at the library in the spring, so I get mornings to myself, and I’ve taken up bread baking with mixed results. The sourdough starter is named Gerald. He is thriving; the bread is still a work in progress.

I realize it has been almost two years since we really talked, and I don’t want it to be two more. How is your mom? Did you ever get the garden going behind the new house? I want the real answers, not the holiday-card version.

Write back when you can, or call me some Sunday. I’m around.

With love,

Tess

Hi Jordan,

It is 7 a.m., I’m on the porch with coffee, and the neighbor’s rooster is doing his usual concert. I wish you were here to complain about him with me.

The new apartment is finally starting to feel like mine. I hung the print you gave me over the couch, and every person who visits asks about it. I tell them my best friend has better taste than I do, which they never argue with.

Quick news: I tried the ramen place you recommended, and you were right; my brother is engaged; I still can’t parallel park. Your turn. Are you still doing Thursday trivia?

Let’s pick a weekend in the spring and actually put it on the calendar. I’ll bring the bad snacks.

Miss you,

Sam

Sample letter to a friend after a falling-out

October 22, 2026

Dear Chris,

I’ve started this letter a few times, so I’m going to say the important part first: I’m sorry for what I said at your birthday dinner. It was unkind, it was in front of people you care about, and you didn’t deserve it.

It had more to do with my own stress that month than with anything you did. That isn’t an excuse, just the truth, and you deserve the truth from me.

Our friendship has been one of the steady things in my life for twelve years. I miss our Saturday walks, and I miss being able to tell you things. I’d like the chance to make this right, whenever you’re ready, and I understand if you need more time.

Either way, I hope the new job is going well. I’m rooting for you.

Yours,

Ana

Sample letter to encourage a friend going through a hard time

October 22, 2026

Dear Priya,

I’ve been thinking about you all week. I don’t have the right words for what you’re going through, and I’m not going to pretend I do. I just want you to have something in your hands that says I’m here.

You have always been the person who shows up for everyone else. You drove four hours when my dad was in the hospital and never once made it feel like a favor. Watching you handle this with so much honesty and humor reminds me why I’m lucky to know you.

I’m going to drop off dinner on Thursday. You don’t have to answer the door or write back. If there’s something more useful I can do, like walking the dog or sitting with you at an appointment, tell me and it’s done.

Always in your corner,

Meg

How do you end a letter to a friend?

End by looking forward. A closing line that invites a reply or names a plan keeps the friendship moving: “Write back and tell me everything,” “Let’s call on Sunday,” or “Save me a seat at the next game.” Then pick a sign-off that matches how close you are, followed by a comma and your name.

Warm sign-offs for close friends include Love, Lots of love, Miss you, Hugs, and Always. For friends you are reconnecting with, With love, Warmly, Yours, or Take care feel right without being too much. Cheers and Talk soon suit a breezy note. A P.S. is welcome in a personal letter; it is a good place for the joke or the one thing you forgot to say.

Should a letter to a friend be handwritten or typed?

Either is fine. Handwriting feels more personal and suits a short letter or card; typing suits a long letter, hard-to-read handwriting, or a page with photos. You can mix the two by typing the letter and adding a handwritten line and signature. If an online service prints and mails it for you, the whole page is printed, signature included.

How do you mail a letter to a friend?

Fold the letter to fit the envelope, write your friend’s name and address in the center of the front, and put your return address in the upper-left corner. A standard rectangular envelope weighing up to 1 ounce, about four sheets of printer paper, needs one $0.82 Forever stamp in the upper-right corner. Square cards and heavier letters need more postage, and a letter to another country needs a $1.75 Global Forever stamp.

If you don’t have stamps or a printer, IRIS can mail it for you. Save the letter as a US Letter-size PDF, upload it, enter both addresses, and review the document, addresses, and total before paying through Stripe Checkout. A one-page black-and-white letter costs $3.20 with First-Class postage included, and each added page is $0.20 in black and white or $0.40 in color. No account or subscription is needed.

For a short hello, a postcard is the lighter option. IRIS prints a 4 × 6 postcard from your photo or one of our designs for $3.49, or a 6 × 9 card for $4.49, postage included, with your typed message on the back. Know the limits first: IRIS mails only to US addresses, one recipient per order, the message is printed rather than handwritten, and it can’t enclose photos, cash, or gifts. Delivery follows the USPS First-Class Mail service standard, so order a few days ahead of a birthday.
